New Hands

Close to the Heart

Forward from Christina:

It only seems appropriate to share this blog from our client, Ric Martin of Bluestone Wealth Partners, during Heart Health Month. Ric has one of the most positive, upbeat personalities you can imagine … we look forward to our weekly status calls because it’s always a pleasure to chat with him. Until recently, we didn’t know Ric’s heart history and are absolutely compelled to share his most recent blog in hopes of encouraging our family, friends and clients to take the necessary steps to living your best life.

By now, you are probably overwhelmed with reminders that Valentine’s Day is just a few days away! Our inbox is being filled with emarketing from jewelry stores, restaurants, florists and of course, chocolatiers to make sure you don’t forget to celebrate the person closest to your heart. But, it is also an important reminder that February is nationally recognized as Heart Health Month. So, even more important than making a dinner reservation, we should take time to focus on our heart health.

You might be wondering why I am dedicating our monthly blog to heart health, but I take it personally, for my family, clients, friends and for myself.

At 17, I was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Defect called “Coarctation of the Aorta.” It was an incredible shock to my family and to me. I was a young athlete whose days were filled with school and playing sports and suddenly I was undergoing my first heart surgery. Basically, I was born with “bad parts,” more specifically, a bad aorta.

Over the years, I have had two additional heart surgeries. It still amazes me that the surgeons simply replace my bad aorta with “new parts.” I am incredibly grateful to those who dedicate themselves to heart health; they keep me living a healthy and full life.

According to the Center for Disease Control, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. While this fact definitely gives us pause, it is heartwarming to know that so many organizations are dedicated to bringing awareness to heart health throughout the year, not just during the month of February.

As you can imagine, I am incredibly passionate about giving back to the American Heart Association. My wife, Lori, and I support their mission not only as Cor Vitae donors, but also as involved members. Lori and I have been involved with the “Go Red for Women” campaign for several years. In fact, my son and I walked the runway a few years ago for their annual fashion show! And, when we aren’t walking the runway … we participate in the annual Heart Walk! When able, I attend research meetings to learn more about the future of heart science and always leave in awe and inspired by the work being conducted. The American Heart Association firmly believes that scientific research can and will lead the way to better treatment, prevention and ultimately a cure for heart disease. For all of those impacted by heart disease and other issues, I certainly believe a cure will be found.

Yes, I have had to overcome health challenges because of my heart, but because of incredible doctors and scientific research conducted, I am fortunate to live a life I love and make an impact on the lives of others. As a financial wealth advisor, I appreciate the opportunity I have to provide my clients an organized and well-structured financial plan. On a more personal level, I want to share the knowledge that I have gained over the years to encourage my clients to live a healthy lifestyle.
